Movie theater seat reservation

Project background: We’re creating a Movie seat reservation app to allow users to reserve a theater seat online. We would like to study the advantages of reserving a seat online vs. purchasing a ticket and finding a seat. We want to create a product for customer satisfaction and improve sales.

Target Audience: Moviegoers between the ages of 18-35

My role: UX designer designing a site for both desktop and mobile from conception to delivery

Key Challenges: Must complete app/web within a couple of dates. Limited access to target audience.

Research Study Details: The research method chosen was interviews with participants at a local coffee shop. This search method was chosen because it provided the quickest results given the time restriction. The research study helped me understand the current challenges that students face studying and taking test.

Research insights

1) Based on the theme that: most users had issues navigating the seat selection screen, an insight is: The seats in the seat selection screen need to be smaller and labeled to determine row and seat.

2) Based on the theme that: most users had issues determining the types of accessibility seats available, an insight is: the accessibility seats need to be clearly labeled and color coded.

3) Based on the theme that: a few users were unhappy with how much personal information was revealed by simply selecting the user information icon, an insight is: an extra layer of security needs to be added to personal information listed in the user information screen.

Takeaways:

Impact:

Users were able to use the app to reserve a seat for their desired movie and time. The pain points identified from the 2nd usability study helped smooth out any issues with the app.

What I learned:

While designing the movie seat reservation app I learned that just labeling a label does not always make it clear to everyone. The feedback from the usability studies helped me determine that elements also have to have a familiar shape in order to be clearly recognized.
